Our Story
The Youth Singers of Calgary (YSC) is a success story and one of the city’s largest not-for-profit, volunteer based performing arts companies. Founded in 1985, YSC had the vision of developing important and necessary “life-skills” of young people: leadership, teamwork, self-worth, while giving them the chance to express themselves on stage through music, dance and acting.
25 years later, Youth Singers has become one of Calgary’s most accomplished performing arts companies and its most comprehensive performing arts training program. YSC provides an exceptional music education and performance opportunity that has shaped the lives of thousands of young people providing them with passion, purpose and direction.
YSC’s primary focus is to promote the development of our community’s youth, in order to encourage the advancement of individual “life-skills” and to foster leadership potential. Our students are continuously challenged and through teamwork, diligence, competition and a commitment to excellence, they acquire skills and a work ethic preparing them for their roles as exemplary citizens and leaders.
Youth Singers of Calgary mission includes being inclusive and accessible to all. As a result, Youth Singers has worked with numerous special needs individuals in the past, such as participants who are physically disabled and hearing and visually impaired individuals. However, in the past we have only had an adequate level of expertise in working with special needs individuals, furthermore we experienced facility constraints that limited our accessibility to special needs individuals.
YSC is now in a position to fully integrate a special needs program into our organization due to: 1) Staff expertise (An employee that has graduated with a degree specifically for Special Needs Education) and 2) the accessibility of our new facility (with numerous studios that are easily accessible).
Our goal is to develop this new music education program for Special Needs individuals. However, funding is required for the development. |
