Kronau is a community of approximately 250 people. The town has grown and is continuing to grow. It consists of both long time residents and new residents. Most residents of the community work in the city but choose to live in Kronau for the smaller close community feel.
Our town has a gas station/general store, an ice cream shop, an old church restored to a museum, a volunteer fire station, a hall and a curling rink.
The town is in the process of upgrading our Curling Rink to become a Multipurpose Facility. The Curling Rink has been apart of our community since 1976 and the Community hall was built in 1948. The hall is no longer useable for large events as it has only one bathroom with no kitchen facilities. The curling rink waiting area and lounge needed some major repair and renovations.
The community recreation board decided that in order for the community to have a central place to gather and hold events, it would make sense to demolish the waiting area and lounge at the curling rink to rebuild a larger facility where we can all come together.
The curling rink and hall have been a huge part of our community where many events have taken place such as family reunions, weddings, steak nights, fundraisers, junior programs, town meetings, senior card nights, work out programs, playschool, fun and competitive curling leagues, bonspiels. Many people from Regina and surrounding towns also come to participate in many events in our community. The curling rink has hosted events such as Provincial Postal Curling Championship, Canadian Dart Championship, and International curling exchange with Germany.
The curling rink has not only housed events for the people living in Kronau but it has provided a strong and rich curling history. Many successful teams represent the Kronau Curling Club and Town of Kronau at Provincial, National and World levels and also Olympic Trials. The ability to represent Kronau at Canadian and World championships has put this small town on the map. We have seen these teams continue on and be great role models for younger children and athletes in our community. Last year the ’Little Rockers’ program had over 20 young participants learning skills to become next provincial or Canadian Champion.
In a province where small communities are becoming a way of the past, our community continues to grow. Our community has a lot to offer due to the diversity of the people and their exuberance to revitalize the town. A great new facility will provide a lively resurgence into the community’s ability to come together and bring others into our small town.
The restoration of the curling rink as a multi–purpose facility is not just a physical revival but a revitalization of community pride and spirit as it will become the heart of the community. |
